Projects
1
By and For: A Participatory Ethnic Media Fund
With funds from our two angel investors, California Black Media and Ethnic Media Services, we are convening ethnic media outlets to use collective decisionmaking practices to distribute resources in four areas: 1) emergency funds, 2) infrastructure and growth funds, 3) research and analysis, and 4) seed funds for emerging media. Our collective decision-making process enables ethnic media to maintain an editorial firewall with funders.
4
Grants Capacity Building for Community-funded Ethnic Media
We are developing a training program to help community-funded ethnic media learn how to apply for public and philanthropic grants.
2
California Black News Equity Initiative
Working with state and local legislators, we are advocating for the inclusion of both community-funded and nonprofit Black media in public funding strategies, including reparations for the decades of public policies that have marginalized Black media by race.
3
Documenting Revenue Diversity for Community-funded Ethnic Media
We are hosting conversations with community-funded and nonprofit ethnic media to document the impact of both public and philanthropic income on the field. We are identifying revenue sources and the impact of that funding on editorial autonomy and operational freedom.
5
California Black News Baseline Assessment
With funds from California Black Media, we are conducting a baseline assessment of the financial health and revenue streams of Black news outlets in California.
